These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of the VocabuLens platform, including the website at vocabulens.com and the application at app.vocabulens.com. By creating an account or using VocabuLens, you agree to these terms in full.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years of age to use VocabuLens. By using the service, you represent that you meet this age requirement. If you are under 18, you represent that your parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these terms on your behalf.

2. Your account

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at hello@vocabulens.com if you suspect unauthorised access. VocabuLens is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your failure to protect your credentials.

3. Acceptable use

You may use VocabuLens for personal or educational language learning. You agree not to:

• Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the service, other accounts, or our servers.
• Introduce malware, viruses, or any code intended to disrupt or damage the service.
• Use automated scripts, bots, or scrapers to bulk-create accounts, harvest data, or circumvent rate limits without prior written permission.
• Harass, impersonate, or threaten other users.
• Submit content that is illegal, defamatory, obscene, or that infringes any third-party intellectual property or privacy rights.
• Use the service in any way that violates applicable local, national, or international law or regulation.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules, with or without prior notice, at our sole discretion.

4. Content you submit

Vocabulary words, mnemonics, notes, and courses you create remain your content. You retain all ownership rights in that content. You may export or delete your content at any time from the Profile page.

By submitting content to VocabuLens, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to store, reproduce, process, and display that content solely for the purpose of operating and improving the service — for example, to cache audio files, render your courses to enrolled learners, and display your public profile.

When you make a course public, other registered users may browse and enroll in it. You may make a public course private at any time; this stops new enrollments but does not erase existing learners' progress on your material.

You represent that you have the rights necessary to submit content to VocabuLens and that your content does not violate the rights of any third party. We do not actively monitor user-submitted content but reserve the right to remove content that violates these terms.

5. AI and third-party processing

When you use AI-assisted features — adding a word with auto-fill, generating a course, or extracting vocabulary from a passage — the text you provide is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for processing. Anthropic is based in the United States; we cover the legal basis for this transfer in the Privacy Policy. Do not submit passwords, personal health information, or other sensitive material as vocabulary content — it is transmitted to Anthropic's servers and is subject to their terms and privacy policy.

AI-generated content (definitions, examples, mnemonics) is provided for educational assistance only. We make no representation or warranty as to its accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any particular purpose. You are responsible for verifying AI-generated content before relying on it.

Pronunciation audio is fetched from configured speech providers (Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, or Forvo). Only the individual word being spoken is transmitted — no account information is included.

6. Intellectual property

The VocabuLens name, logo, and the platform itself (software, design, and underlying systems) are the property of VocabuLens and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These terms do not grant you any right to use our trademarks, service marks, or trade dress.

7. Account termination and data deletion

You may close your account at any time from the Profile page. Closure takes effect immediately. We retain your data for a 30-day recovery window in case the action was unintentional; after that period your data is permanently removed. The Privacy Policy describes exactly what is deleted and what is anonymised.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the service at any time if you breach these terms, with or without notice. Upon termination, your right to use the service ceases immediately. The provisions of these terms that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including without limitation ownership provisions, warranty disclaimers, and limitations of liability.

8. Service availability

VocabuLens is provided on an availability basis without any uptime guarantee or service-level commitment. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service at any time without prior notice or liability. Scheduled or unscheduled downtime for maintenance, updates, or unforeseen circumstances may occur.

We strongly recommend exporting a backup of any course content you care about. VocabuLens provides a data export function on the Profile page for this purpose.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, VOCABULENS AND ITS OPERATORS PROVIDE THE SERVICE "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE OPERATION. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, THAT ANY CONTENT OR DATA WILL BE ACCURATE OR COMPLETE, OR THAT DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED. YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE IS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

10. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL VOCABULENS, ITS OPERATORS, AFFILIATES, LICENSORS, SERVICE PROVIDERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, OR CONTRACTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR ACCESS TO OR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

IN JURISDICTIONS THAT DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN CATEGORIES OF DAMAGES, OUR LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE GREATEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. IN ALL CASES, OUR TOTAL CUMULATIVE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE TOTAL AMOUNTS YOU HAVE PAID TO US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR EUR 10 (TEN EUROS), WHICHEVER IS GREATER.

Some jurisdictions do not permit the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or liabilities. If you are a consumer in such a jurisdiction, some of the above limitations may not apply to you to the extent prohibited by mandatory consumer protection law.

11. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless VocabuLens and its operators from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, judgments, awards, losses, costs, expenses, or fees (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or relating to your violation of these terms or your use of the service, including, but not limited to, content you submit and any infringement of third-party rights.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms at any time. If we make material changes, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of the page and, where reasonably practicable, notify existing users via an in-app notice on their next sign-in. Your continued use of the service after the effective date of any change constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms. If you do not agree to the revised terms, you should stop using the service and may request deletion of your account.

13. Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Finland and applicable European Union law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. You agree that any dispute arising from or relating to these terms or the service will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Finland, unless mandatory consumer protection laws in your country of residence require otherwise.

14. Entire agreement and severability

These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and VocabuLens with respect to the service and supersede all prior agreements. If any provision of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
